Information about Aalborg
Aalborg, at the heart of Northern Denmark, is a historical city founded by the Vikings on the shores of the Limfjord. Further information about Aalborg, its university, culture, social life and sights can be found by following the appropriate links.
St. Hans Bonfires
Sankt (saint) Hans Eve is celebrated on June 23rd, the longest day of the year. The evening commemorates the birth of Sankt John in 330 AD with good food and bonfires along the Danish coast. The bonfires are also associated with old superstitions, where on Sankt Hans eve witches are supposed to fly to Troms in Norway; Blaakulla in Sweden or to Bloksbjerg in Harzen, Germany - to have a night party.
The picture below is "Midsummer eve bonfire on Skagen beach" by P.S. Krøyer in 1906, one of the most famous painters living on the Northern tip of Denmark at that time.
